Do You Want to Get Funked Up?

Check out the funky, butt waggle inducing sounds of The Bamboos: (or this video, which has embedding disabled for some reason…)

The first real concert I ever went to was Soulive playing the Filmore at Irving Plaza in NYC.  If you’ve never been, it’s a rather small place.  The intimate venue allowed for an amazing interaction with the three members of the band, who played their hearts out to an audience dancing its collective ass off.  Sweat poured and smoke flowed as the amazing, non-stop, 4 hour set wore on.  That’s right, in 2002 it was still legal to smoke inside, though what people were smoking is still illegal in most places today – except for medicinal purposes, of course.  Needless to say, it was an awesome show (COUGH).

It was quite a funky introduction to the soulful sounds of a band that thrives during a live performance.  I then purchased and listened to a few of their albums, which are good, but not even in the same ballpark when compared to their live shows.  I was always disappointed that the booty bumping, sweat dripping energy of their music didn’t translate 100% in the studio recordings, most likely due to the lack of live improvisation – of which the members of Soulive are masters.

The Bamboos, though not exactly the same genre of music as Soulive, have a similar rump thumping groove.  I have yet to see them in concert ( and based on the quality of their website I don’t know if I ever will) but if their music is as good live as it is recorded, I’m sure it would be quite a derriere shaking extrordinaire.
